American sterling silver thread spool holder marked for S. Cottle & Company. This company was in business from 1877-1920 in the New York area. They produced novelty and vanity items in silver and gold.
The holder comes apart in the middle and it is marked with the S. Cottle trademark, Sterling and 7. There is a small ‘slit’ in the collar for the thread to be extracted from as the spool remains hidden in the holder. All-over raised flower design and in excellent condition.
From the Estelle Zalkin/Bonnie Erney collection. According to the late Estelle Zalkin, she purchased a number of these thread holders from an auction that included items from First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt’s collection — the thread holders were a part of this collection.
I will be listing other sterling holders from this same collection so check back for new holders from this same collection and also find me on eBay ID: serengeti2.
