Thimble design was inspired by the famous painting Spirit of ’76 by Archibald M. Willard (1837-1918). It began in 1874 as a humorous sketch called “Yankee Doodle” for the 4th of July celebration. He later changed it to a painting with a serious theme for the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876.
